Guidance for Churches
Providing a church policy regarding cell phone use and texting while driving is important reminder for employees to understand the church policy and state laws.
Although the dangers of “distracted driving” are well-documented, many people still engage in the practices of texting or using cell phones while driving. Churches should take steps to discourage these dangerous practices when employees are driving for ministry and business-related reasons or using their cellphones for ministry and business-related reasons while driving.
Many state laws prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone to text, email or access the internet while operating a motor vehicle, except in the case of emergencies.
Handbook Statement
As set forth in the Employee Handbook, the Church prohibits employees from using cellular phones for ministry and business reasons while driving for church-related purposes and /or driving a church-owned vehicle. Employees should also be aware that using a handheld wireless telephone to text while driving may be a violation of state law, in addition to being a violation of church policy. It may also be a violation of state law for a driver to use a handheld wireless telephone for any reason, other than in an emergency. All employees are expected to obey all traffic laws while operating a vehicle for church business.
